Sukuma Ccentre At the heart of Ohlange TownShip Community North of Durban
SUKUMA is a registered non-profit, non-government charity organization founded in 2003. It was formed by a highly concerned committee of volunteers.
The organisation's primary objective is to provide opportunities for making a living to community individuals affected by poverty, in doing so, nurturing their skills,talents and capabilities.
The vision is to assist community members in such a way that they are capable to create income generating projects on their own, so as to alleviate poverty. The first committee comprised of Mr. Agrippa Blose (Chairman) Dumisane Mthiyane ( Deputy) Mr. T Mbatha (Secretary) Miss Buyi Majola (Deputy Secretary) and Treasurer Miss Nobuhle Gabela.
Sukuma has a number of projects currently running, from vegetable plots, skills development, Garden project, sport and arts as well as a feeding scheme. Sukuma provides skills via co-opts, doing beadwork, juice refreshments, maas(sour milk) provision and baking facilities.
Sukuma caters for orphans and disadvantaged kids via its feeding scheme and soup kitchen programmes. Another of the organizations many outreach programmes is one that links youths with skills development training endeavours, hence some young persons have graduated with community development diplomas. Some have been trained by World Changers for life skills and capacity building. World Changers links these youths with the Red Cap foundation for possible employment, in the process reducing the number of unemployed youth.
